Profitroom has published a practical checklist for hotels that want to be found and cited by AI search tools. Its central point is that AI assistants cite hotels whose websites machines can read without guessing, and that Google says its AI Overviews and AI Mode need no special files or markup beyond sound SEO.
Let the crawlers in
Crawler access comes first. Google's AI features rely on normal Search crawling, so robots.txt and any CDN or hosting rules must allow it. Other assistants use their own bots: OpenAI's OAI-SearchBot surfaces sites in ChatGPT search, while GPTBot gathers training data. Blocking the wrong one can remove a hotel from an entire AI product, so web teams should check robots.txt and bot protection settings.
Publish facts as text
AI systems can only quote what they can read. Profitroom recommends putting these on crawlable pages rather than in images, PDFs or booking widgets:
- room types with size, beds, occupancy and view;
- check-in times, cancellation terms and deposit rules;
- parking, pet policy and accessibility;
- spa, restaurant and activity details with opening hours.
Use structured data correctly
Schema.org's Hotel type includes properties such as address, starRating, amenityFeature, checkinTime, petsAllowed and containsPlace. Google's firm rule is that markup must match visible page text. Profitroom says its hotel websites include structured data, AI-readable metadata and multilingual versions.
llms.txt is optional
The proposed llms.txt summary file is not needed for Google, and its effect is unproven, so Profitroom treats it as a low-cost extra.
Measure visibility
Google includes AI Overviews and AI Mode traffic in Search Console's Performance report. For other assistants, hotels can track referrals from chatgpt.com and perplexity.ai and test typical guest questions monthly.
FAQ highlights
OpenAI says robots.txt changes take about 24 hours to reach ChatGPT search; blocking GPTBot does not remove a site from ChatGPT search if OAI-SearchBot is allowed.
