Profitroom says many African hotels it audits receive enough website traffic but lose visitors during the booking journey. Michael Puffett, Senior Partnerships Manager working with Profitroom, says traffic "is only half the equation" and small improvements to the journey can significantly lift direct revenue.
Five conversion killers
- Slow mobile pages: sites taking more than five seconds to load push guests to OTAs. Profitroom data puts mobile checkout conversion for African-origin travellers at 17.8% versus 26.0% globally, a gap it attributes to experience quality rather than mobile adoption.
- Confusing booking journeys with too many steps, hidden fees or unclear availability.
- Rate confusion when direct prices exceed OTA prices.
- No direct-booking incentive: extras are attached to just 6.4% of African bookings against 21.4% globally, according to Profitroom.
- Payment friction from limited options, weak security cues or failed transactions.
The hidden problem: disjointed booking engines
Profitroom also warns about booking engines that look and feel separate from the hotel website, often embedded through iframes. These can break analytics tracking, introduce security risks and give a poor mobile experience, and hotels often cannot see where guests drop off.
Profitroom says its Booking Engine 360 keeps the journey consistent with the hotel's brand. "We domain mask, we do not white label," Puffett says. Leigh Myles, Regional Director for Africa, adds that tracking is embedded at every step, with GA4 and GTM support for full attribution reporting.
Results
Profitroom cites Zanzi Resort in Zanzibar, which modernised its direct booking approach in 2023. By 2024 it reported 41% more direct bookings, an 84% rise in direct booking value, 29% more direct room nights and 89% of visits from mobile. Across African hotels on Profitroom's booking engine, direct bookings grew 107% between 2023 and 2025, from 78,927 to 163,739.
Next steps
Profitroom suggests hotels mystery-shop their booking flow, check rate parity, test mobile speed and request a free audit.
