Mews has published a guide to building a hotel tech stack, defined as the collection of software and digital tools a property uses to manage operations, serve guests and drive revenue. Its central message is that how well systems work together matters more than how many there are.
Six foundational systems
- Property management system: the operational centre, handling reservations, room assignment, check-in and checkout, guest profiles and billing, and feeding data to other systems.
- Online booking engine: lets guests book direct on the hotel website, ideally mobile-friendly with secure payments, multiple languages and currencies, packages and add-ons.
- Channel manager: distributes rates, restrictions and availability to OTAs and returns reservations to the PMS, cutting manual updates and availability errors.
- Revenue management system: analyses hotel and market data to guide pricing, with connected rate changes flowing into operations.
- CRM: organises guest data to segment audiences and personalise communication before, during and after a stay.
- Point of sale: manages restaurant, bar and outlet transactions and posts eligible charges to guest accounts.
Mews suggests checking whether core platforms already cover functions such as analytics, reputation management or upselling before buying separate tools.
Integration as a business capability
Disconnected systems create duplicate entry, inconsistent guest records and fragmented reporting. Mews recommends asking:
- What data moves between systems, and in which direction?
- Is it real time or scheduled?
- Which system is the source of truth for reservations, inventory, profiles and payments?
- What happens when the connection fails, and who maintains it?
- Are there setup, transaction or ongoing integration fees?
Auditing what you have
Before buying, Mews advises documenting the current stack and its gaps. It also argues cloud-based solutions offer faster implementation and greater control than legacy systems.
Why it matters
The integration questions are a useful vendor-neutral checklist for any hotel reviewing its technology.
